Interview with Devin (9), Kemetree (10) and Detriz (7) – a.k.a. “Graveyard”, the BMX Garden Club.
Becky: What are your hobbies?
Devin: Ride around.
Kemetree: Hit jumps and do tricks I never done before.
Graveyard: I like to ride my bike and hit jumps – some that I never did.
Becky: What kind of food do you like to eat?
Devin: Chicken.
Kemetree: Louisiana peppers.
Graveyard: Peppers and pizza.
Becky: Name a food that is good for you, and a food that is bad for you.
Devin: Carrot good, candy bad.
Kemetree: Apple is good, chicken nuggets are bad because all they is fat and salt.
Graveyard: Pizza is good, and one food you never eat is wild parsnips.
Becky: If you could grow any fruit or vegetable, what would it be?
Devin: Strawberry.
Kemetree: Apple tree.
Graveyard: Tomato.
Becky: You ride by the garden a lot on bikes. Tell me about your bikes.
Devin: Red, fast.
Kemetree: Green, fast, kind of broken. It’s a garden bike.
Graveyard: My bike is black, blue and green and my forks are blue and they say ‘turbo’ and it goes 14 mph.
Becky: Tell me about your BMX garden club idea.
Kemetree: We can do a lot of tricks, and we plant stuff . . . and make a jump and then jump it and do tricks -
Graveyard: Yeah, ride around and do stuff!!
Becky: When I first heard you wanted to start a BMX garden club, I had no idea what we could do . . . bikes don’t go in the garden, and I can’t make a ramp – but what if everyone attached wagons to their bikes and delivered vegetables to neighbors? Or we could bring them carrot cake and zucchini muffins -
Devin: My grandmother can bake one of those -
Kemetree: Or I could ask my aunt if we could make a jump!
Becky: I don’t know about a jump -
Devin: What about making a jump in front of the garden?
Becky: That’s a space for everyone. What about attaching wagons to your bikes?
Kemetree & Devin: Yeah!
Becky: So maybe one day this summer we can attach wagons and deliver vegetables -
Graveyard: But how we gonna do that?
Becky: We’ll figure it out – maybe someone will show us.
These kids really want a ramp, but they’re also interested in attaching ‘vegetable wagons’ . . . skeptical, but interested. Anyone else interested?
